Gen Y Production is a group of theater practitioners and musicians from Malaysia, Singapore & The United Kingdom, producing our very first Musical Theatre; "Harder Than This - The Musical" in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Despite the differences in culture and career backgrounds, we share a common dream and passion towards Musical Theatre. Hence, we reunite to make this a dream come true, for all!

Our Vision

Our vision of this project is to inspire our audience to have faith, to chase their dreams, and to keep perservering. We wish to tell them that they are not alone, everyone is struggling in some way or another. In this project, we cover the aspects of family, relationship, career issues that are faced. As well as personal issues such as depression, suicidal thoughts and how the characters dealt with it. We also wish to tell our audience that family or your upbringing does not limit how you are as a person, ultimately, who we choose to be in up to ourselves. 

We want the people suffering from personal problems to know that they are not alone. 

We want the dreamers, and ones with goals and aspiration to not give up and to believe in theirselves. 

We want the parents watching the show to take note of how sometimes the way things are said and the way a child is treated would cause them unnecessary stress and in turn affect their mood, dreams and perspectives growing up. 

We want the general audience to understand that everything happens for a reason and the one way to success is never to give up, and work hard. 

Ultimately, life is harder than this. Don’t give up, keep going. One day we will get to where we want to be.

Introducing our team behind the scene of Gen Y Production for "Harder Than This - The Musical" :-

Ashlyn Harris - Stage Director 

Ashlyn Harris is an aspiring actress and theatre performer. A Malaysian born, raised in The United Kingdom. Having grown up both in Asia and Europe, she develops her love in learning about arts and culture at a very young age. Throughout her life, Ashlyn has always been fascinated by how the world is represented through the eyes of others. Naturally, she was drawn to performing arts. The interest was cultivated during her teenage years and further developed when she opted to take her Degree in Performing Arts in a local university in The United Kingdom.
 

Ashlyn has been actively involved in a number of theatre plays in The UK since 2012. Her latest performance was as Clover in “Animal Farm The Musical” by Emjay Production and understudy for Nessarose in “Wicked”. 

She formed the “Gen Y Movement” with a group of friends and has recently announced their first production together; “Harder Than This - The Musical”.

Elaine Lim - Musical Director 

Born in Singapore, Elaine majored in Psychology. Music however was her first love. She is now one of Singapore top female beatboxers known for her simplistic, yet groovy style of beatboxing. She is a beatboxer- instructor, a musician and an actress.

As a 10-year beatboxer, she has collaborated with some of the big names in the industry such as MAS1A, a Canada-Singaporean rapper as well as local bands across Singapore. Elaine has performed in various venues such as clubs and festivals, she is also the only female to have achieved top 16 placing among the males in Singapore.

As an instructor, she has been teaching for 9 years. She is now a full time beatbox instructor who goes around sharing her passion and knowledge of beatboxing to the students in local and international schools. 

As a musician, she debuted a few originals this year and have gotten positive responses. She is currently working towards the release of her single. 

Elaine started in 2016 as an actress, participating in small roles in online short film, recently she has been involved in a yellow ribbon project here in Singapore playing the part of the main character’s wife in the music video.

Vinci Chian - Vocal Instructor and Financial Advisor 

Vinci is a Malaysia based aspiring singer and actress who's deeply passionate about theater arts, singing and acting. Hence, "Harder Than This - The Musical" will be her theatrical debut.
Vinci plays the cello and piano and has performed with a few orchestra bands in Malaysia. Music has always been her passion since young. Besides being actively involved in arts and literature, Vinci is also an accounting graduate and now heading the Finance Department in a well-established travel agency in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The Musical Theatre Play

Gen Y Production will be producing our very first theatre performance; "Harder Than This – The Musical " in July 2018. We would like to exclusively invite you to join us in bringing professional-quality theatre performances to Malaysia.  

This is a new musical play, inspired by true life stories of aspiring artists from The UK and S.E.A.  A little unusual; the production covers a broad spectrum of issues which includes severe depression, anxiety disorder, suicide attempts, drugs abuse, upbringing, relationship failures and peer pressure. These are actual life experiences of our lead casts who finally have the courage to unmask themselves, to share the struggles that they have gone through in life to achieve their dreams; representing all those who has been accused as being "Dramatic", when life was just another episode of a frightful nightmare.

Nevertheless, it is a funny, enjoyable and stunningly entertaining musical. Bringing back those 60's - 90's beats, and you will definitely be dancing along with the casts!

We Need Your Help!~

Producing quality live musical theatre is costly and could not possibly happen without continuous supports from our faithful audiences, friends and lovers of arts. In this unstable time of arts funding, your generosity would help to enrich the arts & culture in our community, creating a platform and providing opportunities for our local performers to showcase their talents.

Our Goal is RM30,000

In order to succesfully produce "Harder Than This - The Musical"  we would require a crowdfunding amount of RM30,000 and hopefully more . 

This RM30,000 will be utilise for:

- Rentals of performance venue (80%)

- Audio equipments (5%)

- Miscellanious Expenses (5%) (such as design, printing of posters, tickets,etc.)

- Crew members (10%)

Please help us to make " Harder Than This - The Musical" a success and we hope to see you during our opening night on 5th of July 2018 at KuAsh Theatre , TTDI !! 

Main challenge for our production is in getting sufficient funds. As we are an independent and a non-profit theatre production, this is quite crucial for us at this stage. Hence, we hope to make this crowdfunding project a success.
